Teclara Brings Big-Company Security to the Firms That Can Least Afford a Breach

The Oakville firm gives Canadian professional services firms the kind of security program usually reserved for large enterprises, at a scale and price they can afford.

Cyberattacks on small and mid-sized businesses keep rising, and professional services firms are high on the list. Law, accounting and engineering practices hold client files, financial records and trust funds. They move money by email. Their staff are busy, and a convincing invoice or login prompt only has to work once.

Large companies answer that threat with security teams, round-the-clock monitoring and layers of specialized tools. A 20-person firm can’t staff that kind of operation or pay for it. Yet the stakes are higher for the smaller firm. For its founders and partners, the firm is their livelihood. A ransomware attack or a diverted wire transfer can mean lost clients, regulatory trouble and years of work put at risk.

Teclara Technologies was founded in 2023 to close that gap. Its core service, Managed Security & Compliance, protects a client’s email, identities, devices and cloud data with the same kinds of controls and monitoring large organizations rely on, delivered as a managed service priced for smaller firms. Firms that also want to hand off day-to-day technology operations can choose Managed IT, which includes the full security program from day one.

Enterprise experience, brought to smaller firms

“Business owners and partners spend years, often decades, building something valuable. Yet smaller firms face many of the same cyber threats as large enterprises, without the security teams or resources behind them. I spent my career designing security for large organizations, and I founded Teclara to bring that same level of protection to smaller businesses.”

— Wadhah Hussain, Founder, Teclara Technologies

Founder Wadhah Hussain spent more than 20 years building technology for large organizations. He worked at Deloitte, Accenture and Slalom, and most recently was Principal Enterprise Architect at OMERS, designing cloud platforms and governance for regulated environments. He holds Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert and Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect certifications.

Teclara applies that experience to firms that could never hire it full-time. The work runs as a repeating cycle. Teclara reviews exposure, fixes the priority gaps, protects the environment, reports what changed, and adjusts coverage as the business evolves. At any point, clients can see what is configured, what has been handled and what still needs their decision.

Security across the working environment

The program covers the systems a firm uses every day. Email protection addresses phishing, impersonation and invoice fraud, and staff receive security training and regular phishing simulations. Identity controls include multi-factor authentication, Conditional Access, sign-in monitoring, and revoking sessions when an account may be compromised.

On work devices, Teclara combines endpoint detection and response with application controls, disk encryption and patching. Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace data is backed up daily with point-in-time recovery. Teclara manages the program directly and works with a partner security operations centre whose analysts review alerts around the clock and investigate when the evidence points to a threat. Small firms get 24/7 coverage without building their own security team.

Teclara is a direct Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider partner, so licensing, tenant administration and security are handled in one place. It also supports Google Workspace and Google Cloud. Pricing is based on the number of users and devices protected, so costs track the firm’s size. The firm says improvements to the tools and monitoring already in the program reach existing clients at no extra charge. Separately scoped add-ons are priced on their own.

Evidence when the business needs it

Smaller firms increasingly face the same security questions as large ones. Insurers ask how administrator access is controlled. Prospective clients send security questionnaires and ask whether backups are protected and recovery has been tested. Answering those questions takes current records.

Teclara’s ongoing work documents the controls it operates and every change it makes. For organizations that need a formal reporting cycle, its Managed Compliance Monitoring service adds monthly reviews of agreed technical controls, a running record of findings and fixes, and quarterly reports. The firm also offers fixed-scope engagements for cyber insurance readiness, client security questionnaires and ransomware recovery readiness.

Built and maintained beyond client work

Teclara also publishes two independent products. Rail Six is a live GO Transit departure board built on Metrolinx open data. Canada13 is a search tool for Canadian federal corporation records that links every result back to its source. Neither is a security service, but both reflect the same habits the firm brings to client work: maintaining a product after launch and making the information behind it traceable.

Local roots, Canada-wide reach

Teclara is headquartered in Oakville and delivers its services remotely across Canada, with a focus on Oakville, Burlington and Milton and clients throughout Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton and Niagara. It is also a Community Resource Partner at Innovation Factory, offering a startup security package to the companies in its programs.

Attackers don’t scale down for smaller targets, and smaller firms have less room to absorb a hit. Teclara’s model gives those firms enterprise-level protection at a size and cost that fit, so the partners can protect what they’ve built.
