As of 2025, Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in the national economy, employing around 8 million people—about 63.7% of all private sector workers—and constituting approximately 99.8% of all businesses in the country. These businesses significantly contribute to GDP and export activities, with over 1.2 million firms operating across diverse sectors and regions.
Recent studies show that nearly 94% of Canadian SMEs are prioritizing digital transformation, with 76% planning to increase technology spending, leading to up to 20% higher efficiency and 15% greater customer satisfaction. SMEs are also key drivers of innovation, with 91% adopting generative AI tools, despite 92% facing challenges in implementation. Their growth, resilience, and widespread regional presence underscore their importance as the backbone of Canada’s economy, especially amid ongoing economic fluctuations, trade tensions, and technological advancements.
