Canadian small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) face a growing and sophisticated cybersecurity threat landscape in 2025. Around 73% of Canadian SMBs have experienced cyber incidents such as ransomware, phishing, and business email compromises. These attacks are increasingly orchestrated using AI-generated content and deepfakes, making phishing attempts harder to detect. Ransomware remains a predominant threat, costing affected businesses millions and causing significant operational disruption.
To protect themselves, SMBs should develop comprehensive cybersecurity policies, conduct regular staff training, and employ essential technological safeguards like updated anti-malware software, firewalls, multi-factor authentication, secure Wi-Fi, periodic backup, and incident response plans. Emerging solutions like AI-powered Managed Detection and Response (MDR) are instrumental in reducing threat response times. Maintaining continuous cyber hygiene, monitoring access, and collaborating with cybersecurity bodies are critical to resilience. Moreover, cyber liability insurance is increasingly recommended for mitigating financial exposure. Proactive preparedness, combined with government resources and sector collaboration, forms the best defense for Canadian SMBs against escalating cyber risks.
